Do you snack?

by Laura on July 28, 2010

Hi Everyone, hope your day has been good!

Breakfast this morning was really wonderful. I had two small slices of the German Fruited Rye bread I brought home from Majorca with cashew butter and sliced banana. I also had a bowl of fresh fruit – the rest of the banana, blackberries and blueberries.

Just so delicious!

Mid morning I snacked on some cottage cheese with pecans and a little agave syrup.

Lunch was a bowl of Pea, Broccoli and Mint Soup followed by some strawberries.

I also snacked on 2 fun sized apples during the day at work, I was just so snacky! Before I left to go to the gym I ate a little bag of Lemon Nakd Raisins for workout fuel.

I did a 5 minute warm up followed by 30 minutes of intervals on the step machine, cross trainer and treadmill. I would have usually gone on the bike rather than the treadmill but they were all busy so I took it as a sign to start running at the gym again! I also did 2 sets of my usual abs exercises before popping home and doing my 20 minute Yoga for Runners session.

For dinner I chopped a turkey breast into strips and covered with hot chilli powder then fried off in a little oil and served with a big salad of cos lettuce, spinach, red pepper, green pepper, red onion, cucumber and carrot. I also added a little bit of spicy peri peri salad dressing too.

For desert I quite fancied a protein mocha shake so I combined a scoop of chocolate whey with some soy milk, teaspoon of decaf coffee and a couple of ice cubes.

This has managed to satisfy my hunger so far this evening!

The last couple of days I’ve felt particularly snacky. I tend to have at least one planned snack, but sometimes I just feel so hungry I start to snack on other things. Luckily its nearly always something healthy like nuts, dates, raisins etc. Recently I have tried to make apples my go to snack as I heard Tosca Reno saying that these are good to snack on as they are low calorie and contain pectin, a type of fibre that should help to keep you full. I used to feel really guilty for snacking, but as long as my snacking isn’t down to boredom or stress, and as long as I’m snacking on healthy food I don’t beat myself up. What’s your view on snacking? How many snacks do you eat each day? Do you plan your snacks? Do you have a ‘go to’ snack?

I’m going to finish watching Celebrity Master Chef and then I need to try and make myself a home made head band to wear for the wedding I’m going to on Friday. I’ll post some pics of it tomorrow! Bye for now x

As I mentioned on twitter, I do still feel a bit bad about snacking. I have only just started to snack in the last few months after always seeing all snacks, no matter whether they were healthy, as ‘bad’ and never eating any. It’s nonsense really, I workout 6 days a week and walk 4 miles everyday – I neeeed to snack! It’s a throw back from all those years growing up reading magazines that promote calorie counting and seeing food as the enemy. grr!
Your snacks all look lovely by the way, very inspiring :)

How many calories are you eating? I don’t know how many today has come to, but it really doesn’t seem enough to me with the exercise too. Plus, you seem a little low on carbs. I know you didn’t ask for advice, but you did wonder why you were more “snacky” than usual. I’d say you need to eat a bit more. :)

I totally agree Becky, you need your snacks especially when your active. I think we do still feel like snacks are ‘bad’ due to being told that we should do 3 meals a day and nothing else but I just don’t believe that works for most people.

Hi Emma, I’m not sure on calories today as I’ve never been a calorie counter! Todays eats are pretty standard for me and I tend to eat fairly low carb as I’ve found that usually works for me too. But I think you may have a really good point, especially as my activity levels have increased. Since I’ve started running longer distances again I have uped my carbs a bit but if I’m honest I still worry that if I eat too much I’ll pile the weight back on. Thanks for your comment, I certainly wouldn’t mind eating a bit more! ;-)

I snack a lot, but I’m a firm believer in eating little and often, and what works for me is having three moderate meals a day and three snacks, rather than three massive meals a day and no snacks. If I allow myself to get too hungry throughout the day, I get really irritable and can’t stop thinking about food! Plus, I think it’s perfectly fine if you’re snacking on healthy, natural foods :-) I know I’d much rather fill-up on a bowl of banana soft serve with peanut butter than three chocolate digestives – you can definitely get away with bigger quantities if what you’re eating is healthy and nutritious.

ugrhhhrrrghh!! i left a great big long comment and it dissapeared!!

i said i agree that perhaps you need a little more carbs not refined of course, but you could prob do with them for the level of activity you are doing.
i know you dont cal count but it might be worth loggign your body stats in somewhere like food focus and then add your average days food and activity and see what your coming out at you might be undereating in which case thats why your feeling more snacky.

I just snack when I’m hungry, I try not to think about it too much and just go with what my body wants. That seems to work for me cause if I think and analyse too much I get anxious about it. You might be snacking more because you’ve been doing more exercise or something like that, if I have a long run I’m always more hungry!

When I’m on holiday I can eat multiple snacks during one day but when I’m living my normal life I rare have any. I try to have some snacks with me all times – I get so crancky if my bloogsugar drops so I usually have an apple or something. I also had a selection of nuts at work which helped me in tricky situations.

Joolz, I totally agree with you, and I would certainly rather have the softserve instead of the additive and fat laden digestives!

Neen, one day I might have a week where I track calories just as an experiment and see what I’m actually eating. I have no idea how many calories are in most things I eat unless they come in a packet like a nakd bar, I guess I don’t eat much out of packets so thats why!

Laura, I think thats a really sensible approach, I especially need to make sure I eat more before and after my long runs

Anne, I get really grouchy if I’m hungry so carrying around healthy snacks is a good idea!

I always plan out snacks into my daily eating so I don’t feel bad about it!! I usually have one snack between each meal, and one before bed. Sometimes I’ll find myself in the kitchen grazing on things and I’ll have to stop and ask myself why I’m doing it. Boredom? Anxiety? Actual hunger? Sometimes my snackiness is me ignoring my hunger signals and eating an early meal makes it soooo much better :)

The cottage cheese and pecans looks so good!!

I do snack because I am trying to listen to my body and eat when I am hungry. At first I fel really guilty for snacking, especially because for a long time I was very restrictive over when and what I would allow myself to eat. As time goes on though I am getting more comfortable with it and now I don’t know how I would survive without them!!
