Oh my I had the most amazing smoothie this morning! I did my DVD workout (Davina Fit, Bottom Fit and Top Fit sections back to back) then made this bowl of absolute heaven:

CIMG8057

The best ever Chocolate Cherry Green Monster containing russian red kale (with stalks removed), frozen cherries, scoop of chocolate Sun Warrior protein powder, soy milk, teaspoon of maca powder and muesli for topping.

Seriously, I feel I lack the vocabulary to describe how amazingly tasty this was. I’m officially hooked on the Sun Warrior powder now, more subtle but richer than my old chocolate whey powder, just delicious. My new blender also successfully blended the kale – my old processor could never handle kale and I ended up with a lumpy, chewy smoothie. This was perfectly smooth and gorgeous. The Sun Warrior ain’t cheap so I’ll have to ration it, but I’d rather have this once a week and really enjoy it than have my cheaper whey protein 3 times a week.

Today we had an event at work that ended with a buffet. Luckily the venue always do a good buffet with some healthy options. I had two small cheese savoury sandwiches on wholemeal bread, lots of veggie sticks with hummus, apples, clementines and grapes.

I had a lot more hummus and veggies after I finished this plate plus an additional apple, clementine and more grapes.

Mid afternoon, once I got back to the office, I had some 2% greek yoghurt with broken brazil nuts and a couple more grapes we’d brought back from the event.

For dinner I made a wonderful roast butternut and caramelised red onion frittata with organic goats cheese (using 1 egg and 2 egg whites) plus a salad of romaine and radicchio.

CIMG8066

Desert was just a huge bowl of sliced organic apples with cinnamon and a little muesli.

Tomorrow I have my cousin coming round for dinner so I may take tomorrow night off from the blog. I find this time of year quite strange as the hubby starts to work later nights as he works in retail – this means that we have to make the most of any time we have to spend together, so after my cousin has been and gone it will be nice to have some chill time when he gets in from work. This also affects how I tend to plan meals for us both. I am working on a blog post to look at how I manage to cook for the both of us and take into account our different diets, but also to look at how James has become healthier too.

Do you find trying to eat healthy is helped or hindered by your partner, family or friends? My cousin is happy to eat healthy food so I think a veggie filled stir fry may be in order tomorrow!

I’m now off to dream about how tasty my favourite Butternut Squash Smoothie will taste made with the vanilla Sun Warrior! Catch you later Smile

My hubby has certainly got a lot more adventurous and less picky about what we eat but he still won’t touch stir fries, rice, grains, pulses, beans, any fruit…so many things! So I am a bit restricted in my healthy eating regime.

Boyfriend tries a lot more different foods and is also less picky. He needs to eat regularly and quite consistent meals so it’s sometimes difficult for me to find the right balance.

Wow I love all your flavour combos- cherry and chocolate, apples and cinnamon-mmmm. Andy is pretty health conscious now, and he is supportive of me eating healthily too so that is good :)

I have just recently started to team my daily apple( or three!) with cinnamon and can not believe I had not tried it sooner!
Thank you so much for the idea:)

oh, there’s so much yumminess in this post!

i’ve felt hindered by family before, but lately/eventually they’ve been eating better and enjoying really good healthy food! my brother in particular has noticed loads of improvements in his health since drinking green smoothies :)

Your blog post about managing cooking for two different diets will be interesting. One of the main reasons I went back to veggie was so we could cook one meal for both of us instead of two… I was finding it too difficult to do both!

The colour of that smoothie is amazing. I’m sure it tasted as good as it looks! :)

I’m looking forward to reading your planned post about cooking for your other half. My boyfriend will eat just about anything and always gives my healthy food a try without complaining (and even compliments afterwards!), but sometimes I do worry I’m neglecting him a bit by not providing more substantial (i.e. meat-fest) meals :-/

Becky – that must be so frustrating for a foodie like you! My hubby won’t go near most fruit beans and pulses either :-(

Helene – great that your bfriend eats a wide variety of stuff but I can see how that would be difficult to balance if he eats a lot

Runningcupcake – so good that you have a supportive fella, makes such a difference

Mary – no problem – I love cinnamon on my apples – chopping them up and sprinkling with cinnamon makes them more of a ‘meal’ if you know what I mean!

Tam – it certainly was!

Alissa – I wish I could get more people drinking green smoothies – they would see so many improvements to their health!

Laura – I’m really looking forward to writing the post – its not easy to balance it all but i think it can be co difficult for people sometimes

Jemma – doesn’t it look amazing! Randomly I really want a nail varnish in that colour :-)

Bronagh – Sounds like you have a good un there! I do know what you mean about them having their own treats – I’ll talk about this in my post

Madeline – I will, thanks!

So looking forward to that post. I really need to find ways of forcing Matt to eat better, he already wheezes because of his stupid smoking and his diet of crap doesn’t help. I really do think being brought up by people who care about food does help you in life, he was brought up on iceland’s finest frozen rubbish so just thinks its normal. 9 years and he still hasn’t come round to my way of thinking so I doubt I will have success but hey I still try ;P I manage to force porridge and salad in his mush sometimes

it would be good if everyone would get as addicted to green smoothies as we are in our house right now!

in our green smoothies we’ve had spinach, kale, watercress, lettuce, spring greens (my new favourite), celery + tops, swiss chard, parsley, broccoli, rocket (although this is better in a salad in my opinion!) – i pretty much go to waitrose and see what green things there are!

and also avocado, radish and cucumber work well in them too for added power!

We have recently decided to try and cook and eat vegetarian meals most days, and only have meat and fish once or twice a week. It’s been great to experiment in the kitchen together, using new to us ingredients, such as butternut squash and bulgur wheat. We had become stuck in a food rut, always cooking the same things with the same ingredients, and we also wanted to eat healthier. We’re also trying to cut down on our food shopping costs, and by doing this, and hopefully meal planning a bit more, we’ll be able to spend less on food each month.

I’m lucky in that the husband has embraced my way of eating for the main part. He will happily eat whatever I eat though occasionally, he will have something different but those moments are getting fewer and further between.

He is a big carnivore but has really enjoyed some of the veggie meals I have prepared :)

Chocolate cherry green monsters are the bomb! I love them :)

I am lucky that my hubby will eat whatever I cook (well mostly!) and he is always very concerned about getting enough iron, protein, the right vitamins, etc! And he has been veggie even longer than me (me 3.5 years, him nearly 10!)so we are very lucky that our eating habits and tastes are so aligned. That said, he is a skinny guy with a fast metabolism and who can eat crisps and chocolate like there’s no tomorrow. He has these things in the house but I don’t eat them. Over the years I have learned to be discerning with my treats and don’t really feel tempted by his sugary Sainsbury’s donuts and the like! Give me a few squares of Green & Blacks any day! xx

I’m a bit unforgiving when it comes to other people’s diets — if I’m cooking, then they eat what I make! I do take into account personal tastes though, and will often work in additions / swaps if they want them.

Sarah – I can totally relate to that – James diet was shocking when I met him – mountains of white bread and frozen crap.

Alissa – thanks so much you’ve given me far more ideas what I can use as my greens in smoothies and with other meals too!

Sara – sounds like your doing really well! Its great if your partner is happy to experiment with different foods

Jo – he sounds great!

Anonymous – I’m not sure if you mean food processor or blender but I have a small kenwood food processor (£30 ish) which is great and I recently got a kenwood blender too – it was £75 and has worked very well – hope that helps. So glad you love the blog!

beingthatchange – chocolate and cherries is an amazing combo – hope you enjoyed your smoothie!

Katie – I completely agree!

Phil – I would love my hubby to be a veggie – but I don’t think thats ever going to happen! I completely agree – I would rather have a little green and blacks than a full bar of crappy chocolate!

Alison – You know, sometimes I think thats the right attitude to have. I’m usually so worried about people liking my food but if I don’t even get them to try it then how will they know?

I love reading your blog. It’s interesting to see how so many people’s blokes rebel and just won’t eat the good stuff.

On the butternut squash front, try blending a roasted squash with half a can of coconut milk, about a dessertspoon of Thai red curry paste [although this varies to taste] and enough vegetable stock to make it a good soup consistency. It’s beauuuuutiful, and really filling. One squash makes about 3-4 servings [and I like my soup thick and my portions generous]. So, so yum.
