Bargains and binges

by Laura on December 28, 2010

Thanks for all your really supportive comments to my last post and my little ‘binge’. I think I needed a reality check to remind me that its ok to over eat a little at Christmas, especially when you eat healthily the rest of the year.

Today I woke up with a full blown cold. I’m trying not to let it get me down though! Breakfast was a big bowl of Dorset Cereal Cherry and Almond muesli with blueberries and vanilla soy milk.

This was a lovely big bowl and I really enjoyed it. I also had a mug of Christmas Coffee.

I pottered about and made this huge pan of ‘fridge’ soup:

This contained 2 onions, 3 garlic cloves, 1 small leek, 4 parsnips, 3 carrots, half a large swede, green beans and savoy cabbage plus vegetable stock. All organic vegetables and stock made with organic vegan bouillon. Just what the doctor ordered! Despite feeling under the weather I knew getting myself to the gym would do me good. I gave the treadmill a miss but did 1 hour of HIITs on the cross trainer, bike and step machine followed by my usual abs.

When I got home I ate two big bowls of my soup followed by a fruit salad containing 2 oranges, blueberries, pomegranate seeds and the scooped out insides of a passionfruit:

My appetite has been in full force again today but I have decided to just go with it. This afternoon I had a couple of sliced apples followed by a bowl of mixed fruit and nuts and a large mug of fresh lemon, ginger and honey.

For dinner I made one of my favourite meals – roasted vegetable and tomato pasta with parmesan cheese:

I roasted a red pepper, orange pepper, red onion and a courgette then mixed with some jarred tomato pasta sauce and some wholemeal penne. I used my vegetarian parmesan style cheese generously!

For dessert I made up a bowl of Chocolate Cherry ‘Ice Cream’ using frozen cherries, ice cubes, cocoa powder, soy milk, Rachel’s Organic Cherry Greek Yoghurt and some agave. This made a giant bowl which I topped with two small squares of Green and Blacks hazelnut and raisin chocolate:

Perfect for my sore throat! I’ll also probably have a glass of red wine before bed :-)

Yesterday I hit the sales and was very happy to pick up some fantastic bargains. I had a mental list of things I could do with including a new pair of boots:

CIMG9497

I got these from Dune, reduced from £139 to £91 – they are really good quality leather in a classic design that should last me years.

I also got this coat from Monsoon:

It was reduced from £100 to £50. I really like its touch of military styling and it should go with lots of different outfits.

I also picked up a few random bits and bobs including this dress and top from Topshop:

The dress was reduced from £38 to £15, I thought it was really unusual and funky with its exposed zip at the back. I just loved the top and its draped design on the front, it was reduced from £40 to just £10! I also got a couple of basic vests for £3, a basic grey cardigan reduced from £19.99 to £10 and some leggings from H&M.

While I was out I thought I might was well get some toiletries I needed. I went for some natural and organic products for a change including this Naked shampoo, conditioner and deep conditioner.

CIMG9511

I got some of my favourite Korres body wash and lotion in vanilla cinnamon – they smell divine!

CIMG9512

I also picked up my favourite Bad Gal Lash mascara from Benefit and some pour minimising cream to try, plus some organic surge cream cleanser and some cream cleanser from Lush.

CIMG9520

I like to use a cream cleanser to remove my make up at the end of the day rather than a wash so I thought I’d try these two out to see which is best. The last thing I picked up was this stability ball in Sainsbury’s which was reduced from £8 to £4.

I’m going to start using this in some home workouts.

So I had a very successful shopping trip! Have you been to the sales yet? Did you pick up any bargains?

Love that you call it fridge soup. Everyone looks at me like I’m crazy when I call it that!

I’m hitting the sales tomorrow and hoping that there is still some decent stuff left. Looks like you found some really good deals.

Your soup looks so yummy and full of goodness. Great sales finds – I love the draped top. I got a fitness ball in the sales a couple of years ago and can’t imagine not having one at home.
I visited the sales yesterday and today but was quite restrained in what I bought, I’m planning on going back next week once things have been marked down again! x

Your food today looks super delicious – especially loving your pasta dinner and choc-cherry dessert! Chocolate and cherry has got to be one of my all time favourite flavour combinations so I’ll definitely be giving this a go soon. Where did you buy your frozen cherries from?

I am soo addicted to frozen cherries at the moment!!
Looks like you got plenty of good bargains! I went on Boxing Day with the intent that I was going to buy out the whole of Topshop as I’m a bit of a Topshop addict but I didn’t find a single thing 1. in my size or 2. that I liked! I was shocked! I did get some nice bargains in River Island though – a pair of brogue shoes, a belt and a nice jacket. xx

Ugh, I really need some new clothes, but I just can’t quite bring myself to go to the sales. Maybe I’m imagining it worse than it actually will be. And you’ve inspired me with your wicked buys. I especially love those boots! Hope you feel better tomorrow :-)

The POREfessional stuff is AMAZING!
Loving the look of your breakfast. As with about half of the population, I am starting (yet another) health kick on January 1st and have bookmarked a few of your posts – thank you!

Oh, one more thing! How milky does the vanilla soy milk taste? I hate milk (unless warmed and mixed with porridge!) but need something on my cereal!

Angela – Sometimes its just good to make up a soup full of bits and pieces that need using up! Hope you get some good stuff in the sales

Lily – your right to go back later when they’ve knocked even more off. I think if you know your own style you can pick up some real bargains then.

Bronagh – I get my frozen cherries from Sainsbury’s – they do 3 bags of frozen fruits for a fiver, I love them!

Nicky – I was actually quite suprised that I found stuff in topshop, usually I hate their sales and never find anything but I was really chuffed with what I found. Glad you got some stuff from river island :-)

Alison – I was pretty suprised, it wasn’t as bad as I’d expected it to be! I’m still feeling pretty crappy, hopefully this cold will go soon!

Moley – thanks so much for de lurking! I have been finding it difficult to balance things with regards to my eating and exercise recently and I have lost a lot of weight over the last couple of months. I now realise that I need to eat more but I think its going to take some time while I find the right balance, although it may not seem like I eat that much its not often that I get really hungry. Thanks so much for commenting! Glad you like the blog :-)

Laura – oh good, I’m looking forward to trying that out now!

Maria – Glad you like the boots, I tried looking online but sometimes I find I’m more touchy feely and like to be able to see things in the shops x

Hmm that fruit salad looks yummy! I haven’t been to the gym for nearly 2 weeks now because of this cold/flu I’ve been battling with :( I hope I am okay by the new year and then I can get my routine back into full swing!
