Over the last few months, what started as a casual flirtation has grown into a full blown romance. It started with a few spinach leaves here and there, moved on to experimenting with kale and then eventually climaxed with a full size head of romaine lettuce…
Topped with coconut flour sauce, gojis and cacao nibs, yum!
…yes, I am officially head over heels in love with green smoothies! Here’s why:
- They taste awesome
- They are incredibly filling
- They are extremely nutritious
- Their ingredients can be changed to offer almost endless variety
Green smoothies are now my ultimate comfort food – I love to make them thick and eat them from a bowl – I find them much more satisfying that way. I also have a habit of chugging smoothies down in 5 seconds when they come in a glass!
They don’t always turn out green – try adding berries!
See the fantastic Green Monster Movement for more info on green smoothies and for hundreds of variations!
If your a newbie try the basic green monster – spinach, banana and milk – you can’t taste the spinach!
Here’s the formula I use for constructing a fab green smoothie:
- Take one decent blender (if your using anything other than spinach and any ice or frozen chunkier fruit like banana then you probably need a reasonably powerful blender) and add:
- Greens – kale (leaves striped from the stem), spring greens (thick stem removed), romaine lettuce (or any lettuce really), cabbage (thick stem removed) rocket / watercress (gives peppery taste), sweet pea shoots, spinach, swiss chard, pak choy. You can also add other veggies such as cooked beetroot and avocado. Start with a smaller greens to fruit ratio until you get used to them, then increase.
- Fruit – any fruits that take your fancy! Frozen banana (take a ripe banana, chop, place in bag and freeze) adds wonderful creaminess, as do lots of other frozen fruits. I like to combine a frozen fruit and a fresh fruit plus ice if needed.
- Liquid – water, non dairy milks such as soy, rice, oat, coconut, coconut water, cooled brewed tea (I love chai, jasmine green tea and fruit teas), fruit juice
- Add ins – here’s where you can get really creative and up the nutrition and taste factor: Protein powder – add a scoop of your favourite protein powder, Cocoa powder / raw cacao powder, Nut butter – obviously peanut butter is my favourite! Could also add a handful of nuts, ‘Super’ foods – maca, mesquite, ground flax, carob, chia seeds, hemp seeds, matcha green tea, spirulina etc, Spices – cinnamon, ginger etc, Gums – xanthan gum adds thickness, guar gum adds creaminess, add 1/4 tsp at a time, Ice cubes – extra chill and thickness factor
- Toppings – again, go nuts! (er, literally): Whole or chopped nuts, seeds, coconut, dried fruit (goji berries are my fave), granola, muesli, cereal, more fresh fruit, maple or agave syrup, nut butter (or nut butter sauce swirl), cacao nibs
I now find that I just crave green smoothies – if I don’t have one for a few days I really feel it! They make me feel satisfied, healthy and nourished. In fact I think for the next few days I’m going to be setting myself a little challenge: 7 days and 7 smoothies – yes, a green smoothie each day! This isn’t so much of a challenge really, I’m looking forward to doing it! I have some creative ideas for combinations of difference ingredients that I can’t wait to try. As I’ve been attracted to eating more raw foods having a green smoothie a day is going to be a great way of doing this.
Have you tried a green smoothie? Are you a green smoothie fan? What’s your favourite smoothie ingredients?

I LOVE green smoothies! I prefer them made with spinach rather than kale (even though I do love kale, I find the taste a bit overwhelming in smoothies). My favourites are the most basic versions: spinach, frozen banana, vanilla soy/rice milk and PB! Yum! I also like making them with beets/berries and cocoa powder :-)
I adore green smoothies ~ I was first introduced to them via Oh She Glows but tried making one with an old hand blender the first time…there were bits of spinach stuck in my teeth for weeks! I didn’t get the courage to try again with the big blender of mine until I saw some delicious GMs on Freya’s blog (Brit Chick Runs) and have been addicted since then. Sometimes I think my body has trouble with the raw greens, but I place stress on it in so many other ways that it’s probably not the GMs that are the true culprit.
Is this challenge open to readers too? I wouldn’t mind giving it a go and seeing if I feel any better at the end in terms of energy etc.
I think the biggest GM revelation was putting beetroot in there, although I’d imaging that avocado would make a nice one too in terms of creaminess. My favourite combo is: spinach, romaine, beetroot, rice milk, cocoa powder, frozen cherries and frozen banana, topped with Bear Coco Cherry Pie Granola and peanut butter.
You can really see the positive effect GMs have on you with your glowing skin and hair :)

To be totally honest, no I have not tried a green smoothie ….. I’m too scared to. I know, I know I’m chicken and I should just dive in a try one but to me blitzing spinach and chugging it down as a smoothie just seems unnatural. I’ll get there eventually :-)

ps love your basic recipe & your combo ideas, they make it a little easier and less scary to possibly try one
I’ve never tried a green smoothie but i do like the sound of them. However, I HATE bananas! Do you think maybe if I used a yoghurt it would be thick enough? I like berries so I would probably use frozen berries & spinach. Adding cocoa powder to them sounds lush!
Hi there,
My best combo so far, banana, frozen raspberries, rice milk natural, maca, guar gum, nuts, topping with goji berries and coconut chips :) I’m going to try some green monster soon! Hope that it would taste better then it sounds :D

you are the QUEEN of green smoothies!! i havehad them before but never quite mastered the taste– yours however always look AMAZING!
I’ve never tried a green smoothie before, but I’m intending to lost my green monster virginity at the weekend :) I have a lot of spinach that I don’t know what to do with and a few over-ripe bananas and I thought “aren’t they the perfect green smoothie ingredients?”. Thanks for the tips – I think I’ll stick to the basic maybe with a few add-ins.
Firstly, I love your blog! Secondly, I love green smoothies! I do spinach and occasionally kale then I add banana plus another fruit (strawberries, blueberries or mango) flaxseed oil, chia seeds and some wheatgrass powder, and some kind of dairy-free milk, yum yum!
I also love banana and peanut butter!

I am not a massive smoothie fan anyway- every now and then in the summer I find them refreshing, but for some reason the fruit all blended up makes me feel a bit icky. And the idea of drinking spinach is weird to me too. I prefer it cooked in a nice dinner.!I never find liquid stuff as filling as the real food, so I would prefer to have the ingredients chopped up than all blended. But they always look pretty :)
I love green smoothies but I don’t have them too often because I worry I won’t find them filling enough. It’s probably a mental thing – my brain needs the satisfaction of actually eating food rather than having it in liquid form? It’s odd! I can definitely see why you prefer eating your smoothies from a bowl, perhaps that could help my brain/belly realise just how nutritious and filling a smoothie can be. Maybe I need to try some of your add-in tips too, the peanut butter one sounds particularly appealing ;)
I’ve never tried a green smoothie, but they look lovely, think I’ll have to try!!

I love love love green smoothie! Can anyone join in with your challenge? Although it is more of an indulgence than a challenge. Ha! I cannot wait to see all of your different combinations.
I’m a fan of green smoothies, except I haven’t been in the mood for them with this cold weather!
Your smoothies always look amazing! I’ve been having them every morning recently :)
Haha! This is funny :D
I must admit that I’m not a massive fan — I prefer my greens in salad form, or on the side of a meal. But I do like berry-based smoothies as desserts. Especially if there is some kind of nut butter added!
