Blog reader Sarah Jane recently commented on the cost of all the various ingredients I use and therefore, should anyone be on a budget, what I would recommend as my top budget buys.
I thought this was an excellent question. I have blogged about living on a budget, and some of the ways I try and save money, particularly on grocery shopping. When I did my big budget challenge I wrote this post on what I learned around saving money on groceries. I also recently re listed my grocery staples (in light of becoming veggie) and how I would try and ‘shop smart’ to get the best value.
From what I eat and buy it might not seem like I stick to much of a budget but I do try! I do give myself quite a generous budget for food shopping – some people buy CD’s, some people go out every weekend for a drink, some people buy designer clothes, I buy healthy food!
I tend to have two separate budgets when it comes to my food: my main food / household shopping budget which I use to buy all mine and James usual staples. When I’m buying the more expensive and unusual stuff (that tends to be bought online or from a health food store) then I use money from my own personal spending budget.
I think in terms of sticking to a budget and buying ‘health foods’ the key thing to remember is that they are not essential to having a healthy diet! The most important foods are fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains etc. I know that even some of these things can be expensive but buying dried beans instead of tinned, plain brown rice, wholemeal pasta and pearl barley and whatever fruits and vegetables are on special offer could potentially save a lot of money – believe me I have given this a lot of thought. Should me or James be out of work and on a serious budget then that would be the plan.
I see ‘health foods’ as fun additions to my diet that add variety and take things to the next level. I think if you are on a tight budget but want to experiment with some more unusual health foods then you should look for items that are going to give you the most bang for your buck i.e. that taste great, have a wide range of health benefits and can be used in a multitude of ways. With that in mind here’s a few of my top budget buys:
Nutritional yeast –

Can be added to salads, pasta, stews and mixed into various sauces for cheesy taste. Its full of B vitamins, plus a big tub of flakes isn’t too expensive and should last you a while.
Raw cacao powder –

Offers similar benefits to cacao nibs but can be used in more ways – blended with avocado and agave to make raw chocolate cups, added to smoothies, used to make raw chocolate, mixed with non dairy or dairy milk to make chocolate milk etc. Its also full of antioxidants and more importantly its bloody chocolate!
Agave syrup –

I use agave syrup in my coffee, porridge, when making various desserts such as tofu puddings, chocolate avocado cups etc. Its around £2.50 – £3 depending on where you buy it, for 250mls which seems to last me a good while – unless I’m using it in a baking recipe I usually just have a teaspoon at a time.
Coconut oil –

I love coconut oil, great for stir fries and roasting as it is better than other oils for cooking at high temperatures. Can be combined with the agave and cacao to make raw chocolate and can even be added to smoothies for healthy fats!
A protein powder –

I’ve used protein powders in my diet for ages now and I love them. The range of varieties and flavours out there is great. See my everything I know about protein powders for more info. They can be added to smoothies, used to make protein pancakes and protein cakes or even protein ice cream. My personal favourite brands are Sun Warrior and Spiru-tein, neither of which are cheap, but for me, I feel they are worth it! There are plenty of much more affordable brands out there too: Holland and Barrat sell a chocolate and strawberry flavour Soya Protein Powder which may be quite highly processed but if used as an occasional addition to your diet to add some extra protein and variety its a good buy.
Of course, what might work better for you depends on your own tastes and lifestyle. See my unusual ingredients posts one and two for more ideas. I would just start by trying out a couple of items that sound good to you and taking it from there.

I love this post!! I’m on a serious budget, so dealing with my foodie addictions isn’t always easy…!
Lentils are my face health food buy!! My local Asian store provides me with a kilo for a £1!! Love it:)
Great product list! I definitely don’t budget on my food—I feel like the quality of what I buy is most important, and I’m almost afraid to add it up and find out how much I spend!
At the same time, I know I should be a little bit conscious of it!
Sun Warrior is my fave—and I have found some good deals from vitacost and open sky!
Great post, healthy food can be expensive but I think that it’s money well spent. I bought some Agave syrup for the first time last week, I can see it lasting a long time as a little goes a long way. I think oats are my top budget buy as they’re really cheap and can be put to so many different uses. x
Great post- like you say different people spend their money on different things! I also dont go for clothes/ music/ dvds/ games/ handbags etc. I love to bulk buy nuts and seeds from Julian Graves, or from Holland and Barrett when they do the buy one get one half price. We get tinned pulses (which I still think are fairly cheap) but you are right, dried ones would cost even less.
im so with you! i would MUCH rahter buy myself healthy food than clothes… i do love clothes but i gotta take care of myself before i can buy them! YES LOVE SUN WARRIOR! we both have the exact same diet staples!!! :D
Ah I so love this post :-) I am totally the same, and do spend a rather high proportion of my salary on food/health foods. I know its probably unusual for someone of my age (most of my friends spend 90% of their money on getting slaughtered 3-4 times a week… not to say I NEVER do that myself ;-)) but I enjoy spending that little bit extra on tasty foods that are good for me as well! My local health food shop know me by name now ;-)
Thanks Laura… Love the detail and your philosophies around food. Going to save this post to my favourites and start experimenting straight away. Will let you know how I get on. ♥ SJ x x
Thanks for this post. I’ve just discovered nutritional yeast and it’s brilliant.
I’ve never tried protein powder – I’m tempted, but as you said it is quite expensive and I’m not sure whether I want to squeeze it into my budget.
You’re so right — eating healthily just requires veg, fruit, beans, dairy, some meat if you want it.. I think things like coconut oil and protein powders are kind of luxuries. But like you, they’re things I choose to spend my money on, to make my food taste better, and also to make it easier to get the stuff that I need as a vegan.
I must admit though that I never got on the raw cacao train. Never really saw the point…
ps — I finally collected your book from the PO depot, and posted mine to you — you should have it tomorrow or Wednesday I hope :-)
Great post! I would really like to try nutritional yeast, I am hearing great things about it.
Am with Lily here, oats and oatcakes are deffo my number one buy. I have used agave for years, am glad its so popular as it used to cost me well over a fiver. I cook with ghee its another good staple. Great post Laura x
I have spent way to much lately on health foods, I looked in my cupboard and have decided to use up all I have before buying more its crazy! ha ha great advice x x
Hi Laura,
I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, and just wanted to say how much I enjoy reading it and discovering new recipes through it (I don’t know how you have time to write so much!). Although I’m a big meat eater, I’m experimenting with raw recipes especially dips and desserts and am intrigued to hear about your use of coconut oil to make raw chocolate – do you have a recipe you might be able to share? I can’t find anything on the internet and seeing as I have stacks of coconut oil, raw cacao powder and raw honey at the ready I would love to get cracking on my own little chocolate world! Thank you
Great post, thank you for taking the time to write it. I would also be interested in where you buy these products as I don’t think I’ve seen nutritional yeast or coconut oil in the supermarket or at my Holland & Barratt.
Emma.
Excellent tips as always: I think it is easy to eat healthily on a budget with staples of dried beans, wholegrains, etc. and probably it would suit me better to do that because then I’d have less choice. The trouble is that, while those foods are nourishing, they require quite a lot of jazzing up in order to make them tasty, and the ‘treat’ healthy foods tend to be the budget-sapping ones. I think that’s more why people tend to turn to unhealthier treats, because they’re a lot cheaper and don’t require any effort to prepare. It’s making healthy food interesting and cheap that’s the challenge, but a lot of your recipes fulfil both criteria and prove that it is indeed possible (case in point, your cauliflower rice that I had last night and adored!)
Sun Warrior is obscenely priced but the bags do last a while so long as you stick to the serving size, which I never used to but am getting better with, mostly due to price! I think PB is a good staple, as those big Meridian tubs would last most people (aside from me, obviously) an awfully long time for the price.

My top buys vary, but I always make sure that I have ground flaxseed and nut butters on hand. I put them in everything!
I’ve just sat and responded to all your comments individually but blasted blogger has ate it and I don’t have time to re write so apologies but be sure I pretty much agree with everything you’ve all said!

Dried beans are the ultimate cheap and healthy food for me! I do splurge on some things- I’m planning on buying my favorite (expensive!) ice cream today :)
Thanks Laura – I can’t wait to get started!
Looks really great! I have always wanted to start eating healthy. Thanks for giving me the inspiration!
